Multi-platinum and Grammy Award-winning modern rockers Linkin Park are is back with new music for the first time in seven years. On September 5, they unveiled the single and video for “The Emptiness Machine,” featuring Dead Sara vocalist Emily Armstrong.
The band performed the new song during an hour-long livecast, which marked Armstrong’s debut with the group. She was joined by vocalist and rapper Mike Shinoda, guitarist Alex Fetter (filling in for Brad Delson), bassist Phoenix, turntablist Joe Hahn, and new drummer Collin Brittain. After the livecast, Linkin Park posted the video for “The Emptiness Machine,” which was directed by Hahn.
The livecast and video were the first steps of a campaign to support Linkin Park’s new album From Zero, which comes out November 15. The album will be the band’s first record since 2017. The band will embark on a six-city world tour with stops in Los Angeles, New York, Hamburg, London, Seoul, and Bogota. Tickets go on sale to the public on September 7th.
According to a press release, From Zero reflects on the band’s past while showcasing their evolution and stems from the bandmembers casually reconvening without expectations or deadlines. In recent years, Shinoda, Delson, Farrell, and Hahn quietly started writing together on an informal basis. Rather than trying to restart the band, their instinct was to reconnect with the creativity and camaraderie that has been at the core of their friendship since college.
They invited friends and peers to join them in the studio and formed a special kinship with Armstong and Brittain. As they tinkered and recorded, they felt an old yearning to create and a familiar chemistry that ignited and spread like burning gasoline. There was no question, the uncontainable energy and undeniable enthusiasm of Linkin Park was back. And From Zero began in earnest.
“Before Linkin Park, our first band name was Xero,” Shinoda says. “This album title refers to both this humble beginning and the journey we’re currently undertaking. Sonically and emotionally, it is about past, present, and future—embracing our signature sound, but new and full of life. It was made with a deep appreciation for our new and longtime bandmates, our friends, our family, and our fans. We are proud of what Linkin Park has become over the years, and excited about the journey ahead.”
Regarding “The Emptiness Machine,” Shinoda says, “The more we worked with Emily and Colin, the more we enjoyed their world-class talents, their company, and the things we created. We feel really empowered with this new lineup and the vibrant and energized new music we’ve made together. We’re weaving together the sonic touchpoints we’ve been known for and still exploring new ones.”
