We’re not sure whether to praise the Guitar Center in Gwinnett County Georgia or shake our heads in disgust. Recently, some of the store’s employees opened a box containing an amplifier stuffed with thousands of dollars of cocaine and methamphetamine. Instead of divvying up the proceeds, hiding the stash, and planning a big staff party, they called police, who confiscated the drugs. All we can say is we’ve known lots of people who worked at guitar stores that would have considered illicit substances a well-deserved bonus for working long hours at substandard pay.
In any case, Gwinnett County police have launched an investigation to try to find whoever might have hidden the drugs in the amp. The mystery began when a box with an out-of-stage shipping address was returned by mail to the Gwinnett County Guitar Center, which was labeled as the return address. Recognizing the incident as unusual, employees opened the box and were rewarded, err, shocked when they discovered the hidden bounty of drugs. “It’s extremely rare this happens at any business,” Sgt. Collin Flynn of the Gwinnett County Police department told WSB TV in Atlanta.
Even so, it’s hardly the first time drugs someone has anonymously shipped drugs to a store through U.S. mail. “They will often try and make the box appear as real as possible,” Flynn said. “They’ll attach business logos or business return addresses on the box.”
A spokesperson for Guitar Center told WSB TV that they have fully cooperated with law enforcement since the drugs were found and continue to do so. The cops don’t suspect anyone at the store was involved in the drug shipment. “In this case, we have employees that did the exact right thing,” Flynn said.
