Steve Vai Launches Collaborative AR Music Video with Fan-Generated Content

“The virtual world is the next frontier for music.”

Guitar virtuoso Steve Vai is diving into the future of music experiences with the launch of the “Zeus in Chains” app, a groundbreaking project that utilizes augmented reality (AR) and fan participation.

Vai has partnered with 4DR Studios, a leader in volumetric video capture, to create a hyper-realistic 3D model of himself performing his song “Zeus in Chains.” This model can be projected into the real world through the app, allowing fans to see Vai perform in any location they choose.

“The virtual world is the next frontier for music,” Vai said in a statement. “This project is about exploring new ways to experience songs and create a truly immersive experience for fans.”

The app launches today and features the first 60 seconds of “Zeus in Chains” compiled from clips Vai captured himself. However, the innovative part lies in what comes next. Fans are encouraged to download the app and create their own videos featuring the 3D Vai performing in any location they desire. Whether it’s a historical landmark, a friend’s backyard, or a humorous situation, the possibilities are endless.

“We believe fans can be a powerful creative force,” said Natasja Paulssen, Creative Director of 4DR Studios. “This project is a unique opportunity for them to be directly involved in the creation of a music video.”

Fans can upload their 10-second snippets directly to Vai via social media or any platform of their choice, using the hashtag #VaiEverywhere. Vai will then integrate this fan-generated content to complete the music video.

This project marks the culmination of a conversation Vai had with Edo Righini, Director of Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, in 2022. The two discussed Vai’s interest in capturing holographic performances, which eventually led him to 4DR Studios and their cutting-edge volumetric video technology.

The “Zeus in Chains” app is available for download today for $2.99 on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. With this launch, Vai and 4DR Studios are ushering in a new era of music experiences, one that blurs the lines between audience and artist.
